Vincent Courtois Quartet -what do you mean by Silence?19.7.2008 >> Ultra Music Nights >> 20 EUR
experimental jazz with classical & pop influence
What Do You Mean By Silence? is a perfect title for Vincent Courtois Quartet’s new album as the music seems to be asking that very question with its heightened sense of space and sometimes playful marriage of modern classical, avant-garde jazz and björkish pop.
The French cellist is a real new millennium musician, as much at home with ethnic and pop settings as he is with new classical music and experimental jazz. He has worked with chansonette Juliette Greco, rai star Khaled and pop band Les Rita Mitsouko, not to mention the jazzier company of Marc Ducret, Michel Petrucciani, Dave Douglas and Steve Swallow. He plays in Louis Sclavis’ Napoli’s Walls and Dans La Nuit, and appears on over 30 recordings.
With drums, trombone and two cellos – Jeanne Added also sings – his quartet equals the famous “something else” in the best sense of that epithet.Members:
- Jeanne Added, voice, cello
- Yves Robert, trombone
- Vincent Courtois, cello, electronics
- Francois Merville, drums, electronics
