Black Dub feat. Daniel Lanois, Brian Blade & Trixie Whitley14.7.2011 >> LP46! >> 30
Producer, singer, songwriter, guitarist, steel-guitarist, drummer. Daniel Lanois is all of those, but more so he is a magician, who can make music expand and glow from the inside.
The 59 year old Canadian started as a producer with his brother Bob in their home basement. Later the brothers built a new studio in an old house in Ontario. There they produced local bands, like Martha & The Muffins. In the early 80’s Lanois was an engineer/producer on some records by Brian Eno, like the moon landing inspired Apollo. Eno asked Daniel to co-produce U2’s The Unforgettable Fire, which made him a very in-demand producer. Later the two have co-produced several U2 albums, including the latest No Line On The Horizon. Known for his spacy, sensual and intimate even when big sound, Lanois has since produced Dylan, Neville Brothers, Emmylou Harris and Peter Gabriel, to name a few. Every time the end result has been counted among the best works of the artist in question.
Since 1989’s Acadie, the busy man has recorded his own music and toured irregularly, but always to excellent reviews. In the new millenium the pace has got faster. The often very minimal sound has ventured from a cajun and folk base into more or less unchartered territories. Lanois brings to Pori his band of last few years, Black Dub. The stunning live unit, whose debut album last year got 5 star reviews, includes drummer Brian Blade, bassist Daryl Johnson and, as the main vocalist/keyboardist Trixie Whitley, the daughter of the late great singer/guitarist Chris Whitley.
