jazz goes Beatles
The German pianist, living in Finland since 1994, has turned the evergreen songs of The Beatles into contemporary jazz. This was a common occurrence in the 60's and 70's, but has since been nearly totally forgotten. The fact remains, though, that the basically simple concept offers a chance to produce endlessly different interpretations, and that, at the end of the day, is what jazz is all about.
Born in Germany in 1961, Sid Hille studied piano, composition and jazz improvisation in his home country and got his Master of Music degree in 1993. Next year he moved to Finland. In Germany he made two albums with his Sid trio. In Finland his main band, after two solo piano albums, has been the Platybus Ensemble that specializes in refined chamber jazz and has produced five albums. The larger Sid Hille Jazz Orchestra grew around the Platybus and released their debut album Disisid last fall. Hille has also made movie and children's music and composed a large work, Frutas Maduras, for trombone and jazz orchestra.
