Maarit ja Sami Hurmerinta Band

15.7.2009 >> LP 44! >> 15 EUR

(FIN)
pop, rock, soul

Having worked continuously from the early 70’s in the triangle of soul, rock and pop, Maarit Hurmerinta is a household name in Finland. Her sexy nasal vocal sound has inspired many a later female singer. One of them is her daughter Janna, a rising soul sister herself. You can call Maarit the funky mother of Finnish Soul, no less!

Maarit’s first eponymous album came out in 1973 and right away included classics, like Laakson linja, Lainaa vain, Laulu kuolleesta rakastetusta and Sua ehkä liikaa pomputin. Participating in the record were many stars of Finnish jazz and rock, like producer Otto Donner, guitar ace Albert Järvinen and songwriters Dave Lindholm, Jim Pembroke and Hector. Next year guitar player Sami Hurmerinta joined Maarit’s band Afrikan Tähti. It was instant love. Since then the couple has made together 17 albums on Maarit’s name, the latest being last year’s Kun yö saapuu. Of the many hits of Finland’s first soul sister, Jäätelökesä and Siivet saan must be mentioned.
