modern jazz, post-bop
“A serious jazz band rises in San Francisco”, is how The New York Times described this octet when they started in 2004, and got it exactly right.
The idea of this band is simple, but great, and keeps the whole thing continuously fresh. Take absolutely top-notch jazz players with a couple of soloists changing yearly and present them with a new repertoire every year.
The material includes new pieces by the individual members of the band plus works by a modern jazz master, this time Wayne Shorter. With people, like pianist Renee Rosnes (Shorter, Joe Henderson, Bobby Hutcherson) and trombonist Robin Eubanks (Sun Ra, Art Blakey), the line-up is mouth- watering, not to mention this year’s soloists.
Grammy-winning tenorist Joe Lovano has investigated jazz from small combos to large orchestras, always deepening his vision. His latest releases are Streams of Expression and Quartet with McCoy Tyner, Jeff Watts, and Christian McBride.
Trumpet player Dave Douglas has been “The Jazz Artist of The Year” in DownBeat, JazzTimes and Jazziz magazines, and played with Bill Frisell, John Zorn and Marc Ribot, to name a few. He started his solo career in 1993 and has since published 23 albums, the latest being Meaning & Mystery with his own working quintet.Members:
