Doted artist Devendra Banhart will make his debut in Finland at Pori Jazz on Thursday July 13th. Several notable jazz musicians – both international and domestic stars – have been added to the festival program as well: Sun Ra Arkestra, The Bad Plus and Ambrose Akinmusire just to name a few. Daily tickets to Pori Jazz main concerts are on available for a special reduced price until March 31st, when S-Etukortti card is presented upon purchase.
Devandra Banhart’s concert in Finland is definitely long awaited, as the American-Venezuelan artist has been somewhat iconic character already for over 15 years. Banhart is often considered as an envoy of the New Weird America genre and he has released nine studio albums of which the latest one, Ape in Pink Marble was released in 2016. He is known as sometimes child likely colourful, always intriguing artist, whose music can be described as alternative and psychedelic folk. He’s been compared to legends such as Tim Buckley, Syd Barrett and Mark Boland and traces of klezmer, Brazilian rhythms, jazz and country can also be heard within his music. Both critics and enthusiastic music fans love him and on Thursday, July 13th he will finally make his debut in Finland.
Other new additions to the festival program on Thursday, July 13th include jazz trumpeter Ambrose Akinmusire alongside his quartet and Julian Lage Trio. Both musicians are among the most noteworthy American jazz musicians of the younger generation. In May Ambrose Akinmusire will release a live album recorded at the legendary Village Vanguard Club, and Julian Lage’s Archlight was one of the most praised jazz recordings last year.
Top-notch jazz from US and Europe
New additions to the festival program on Friday, July 14th include international jazz sensation The Bad Plus and American jazz and soul singer Kandace Springs. Yussef Kamaal released its debut album Black Focus last autumn and is representing the current vibes of British jazz. Two Finnish album release concerts will also take place on Friday as Olli Hirvonen New Helsinki and Pauli Lyytinen Magnetia Orkesteri present their latest works.
On Saturday, July 15th Pori Jazz is pleased to present one of the most known jazz ensembles of all times, as the fabulous Sun Ra Arkestra takes the stage. The ensemble is currently lead by 92-year-old saxophonist Marshall Allen. British saxophonist Shakaba Hutchings brings his band Shabaka & The Ancestors to Pori and there are several South African musicians featured within The Ancestors. Their most recent album, critically acclaimed Wisdom of Elders released in 2016 is a glorious example of spiritual jazz.
