Something's cooking in London. The town – and UK in broader perspective – is the home of interesting and active jazz scene drawing inspiration and influences from all over the world while attracting new audiences especially within the younger age groups. One of the most intriguing newcomers is the band called Yussef Kamaal, which recently released its debut album via Gilles Peterson’s Brownswood record label. The bandleaders Yussef Dayes and Kamaal Williams (also known as Henry Wu) have been active and noted figures of the London jazz scene for a while already. The band's sound is based on the vision of drummer Dayes and keyboardist Williams paying homage to the likes of Herbie Hancock in the 70’s. Yussef Kamaal isn’t a retro band though as they include modern influences from electronic music and broken beat for instance.
