The jouhikko is an ancient Finnish-Russian bowed lyre. It disappeared almost completely when the kantele was raised to the status of national instrument of Finland. The jouhikko has a quiet sound, but Pekko Käppi plays his instruments, which are decorated with skulls and pentagrams, with electric amplification. Käppi started out with blues and folk music, but his macabre expression has gradually approached more traditional rock. Guitarist Tommi Laine and bassist Nuutti Vapaavuori also play in Käppi's celebrated K:H:H:L group.
