Leading an international career hasn’t traditionally been the easiest of tasks for Finnish jazz musicians. Guitarist Olli Hirvonen decided to take on the challenge by moving to New York and staying there even after his music studies – the reason for his move in the first place – were complete. Last year Hirvonen won the international guitar competition in Montreux where the chairman of the jury was none other than the legendary John McLaughlin. This spring British Edition Records will release Hirvonen’s second solo album recorded during winter in New York with his band. In July Hirvonen will bring his American quintet to Kirjurinluoto for the albums official release concert. In a way a circle is about to close at Pori Jazz this summer as Hirvonen was awarded the Pori Jazz artist of the year back in 2011. Now it’s time for the next challenge.
