This trio has an exceptional background because even though the members are still quite young they’ve been playing together over 20 years. Brothers pianist Joona Toivanen and bassist Tapani Toivanen formed the trio alongside with drummer Olavi Louhivuori back in the late 90’s in their teens and have since released five studio albums. Their latest album is titled XX to mark their 20th anniversary and it gained rave reviews. It also got the coveted Teosto Award. The music isn’t based on jazz traditions and there are no traditional jazz solos on the album. After the release of XX they’ve only played a few concerts as the trio lives quite a bit apart from one another – Joona Toivanen in Gothenburg, Tapani Toivanen at Copenhagen and Olavi Louhivuori in Helsinki. This makes their concert at Pori Jazz a rare treat not to be missed.
