Daymé Arocena is one of the most interesting newcomers of Cuban music. Her talents were noted early on and already at the age of 24 she has been compared to the legends such as Nina Simone and Delia Cruz. Gilles Peterson’s record label Brownswood recently released her second album “Cubafonía”, in which Arocena combines her unique Cuban heritage to musical influences from all over the world. Her youthfulness combines within the skilled and charismatically soulful interpretation of her music that revolves around jazz and improvisation. Daymé Arocena always wears white, which is her way of honouring her roots and the Afrocuban santería religion. In her music she’s quite literally drifting between past, present and the future and following her career in the future will most likely be both interesting and rewarding.
